Polar Analytics alternatives for custom and headless stores

Headless and custom stores are two different situations for Polar Analytics, and it helps to split them. A headless Shopify store still keeps its orders in Shopify, so Polar’s one-click Shopify connector can still pull orders, products, customers and refunds. Polar’s connectors page even lists headless CMS tools like Builder.io, Sanity, Contentstack, Storyblok and Prismic. The open question on headless is the pixel, meaning whether Polar’s first-party pixel and Lifetime ID stitch visits on your custom front end to orders on Shopify checkout. Ask for a test before you sign.

A fully custom store is harder. There is no native store connector to start from, so your orders come in through Polar’s AI Data Engineer or a file import such as S3 or Google Sheets, and some connectors carry extra cost. Polar’s pricing is not listed on the website, so the quote is where you will find out what that adds. If you want a tool with a documented path for custom orders, these five are worth comparing.

1. Northbeam

Northbeam has a knowledge base guide for non-Shopify, custom and headless stores, plus an Orders API in its developer docs. Your backend sends historical and new orders, and its pixel fires on the front end with matching IDs. It is built for engineering teams. Non-Shopify setups are pointed to Professional or Enterprise on annual terms, while the $1,500 Starter plan is described as month-to-month for Shopify brands.

2. ThoughtMetric

ThoughtMetric is an e-commerce attribution tool for Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and custom stores, so a custom build is a standard setup. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.) Multi-touch attribution, server-side tracking and post-purchase surveys are on every plan. Pricing is based on monthly pageviews, starting at $99 a month for 50,000, with monthly billing available. It does not replace Polar’s warehouse or BI. It replaces the attribution part, and on the demo you can ask exactly how custom orders get sent.

3. Wicked Reports

Wicked Reports offers an orders API for custom carts and reports off the product names you send. Its LTV and cohort reports cover much of what Polar users look at for retention. Under $2.5 million in annual revenue, Measure is $499 a month, Scale is $699 and Maximize is $999, and cart API integrations start on Scale.

4. Littledata

Littledata is for headless Shopify only. Its Scale plan, $199 a month with 1,500 orders included, adds headless support for server-side tracking to GA4, Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, Pinterest and Klaviyo. It fixes the data going to those platforms. It is not an attribution or BI tool.

5. GA4 with BigQuery

GA4 is free, runs on any front end, and exports raw events to BigQuery. For a custom store with an analyst, this is the do-it-yourself version of Polar’s warehouse. You build the models, and you own every definition.

The test that matters most

On headless Shopify, click a tagged ad link, browse the custom storefront, check out on Shopify, and confirm the order shows the original ad source. If the cookie or ID does not survive the hop between domains, paid traffic turns into direct traffic and every report downstream inherits the error.

On a custom store, have your developer log the customer and order IDs sent from the front end and the backend on one test order. If they do not match, the tool cannot connect a visit to a sale. This takes ten minutes and prevents weeks of arguing about numbers. More in can attribution tools track a headless Shopify store and Polar Analytics alternatives when you only need attribution.

Picking one

  • Headless Shopify and you want Polar’s warehouse? Polar can still work, so test the pixel first.
  • Engineering team and a big ad budget? Northbeam’s Orders API.
  • Want custom-store attribution at a published price? ThoughtMetric (our sponsor).
  • Custom cart with retention questions? Wicked Reports on Scale.
  • Headless Shopify and only need ad platforms fed? Littledata Scale.

About

Six years in e-commerce. Three Shopify stores across different niches, one scaled past seven figures. I’ve tested hundreds of ad creatives, obsessed over email flows, and learned more from my failures than my wins.

Now I focus on conversion optimization, retention marketing, and the analytics behind it all. This blog is where I share what actually works, backed by real numbers. No fluff, no guru energy.
