Growing stores, one honest take at a time.

Polar Analytics alternatives for subscription brands

Polar Analytics is a reasonable fit for subscription brands on paper. Recharge is one of its one-click connectors, its connector directory includes subscription tools like Stay Ai, and everything lands in a dedicated Snowflake database where you can model renewals however you like. The question is whether you need a data platform to answer subscription questions, and what it costs. Polar’s pricing is not listed on the website, so the answer to the second part needs a demo.

Most subscription operators I talk to have two questions. Which channels bring subscribers who are still paying in month six, and why are people cancelling. Those are different jobs, and the tools below tend to be good at one or the other. Knowing which one you need most narrows the list fast.

1. Wicked Reports

Wicked Reports is the most direct answer to the first question. It credits renewals back to the source that acquired the subscriber, with lifetime lookback and cohort reports on its entry tier, and it chains subscriptions from Recharge, WooCommerce and BigCommerce. A renewal in April can still be credited to the influencer post that won the subscriber in November. Under $2.5 million in annual revenue, Measure is $499 a month, Scale is $699 and Maximize is $999.

2. Peel Insights

Peel Insights answers the second question. Its subscription analytics connect to Recharge, Skio, Smartrr, Stay.ai, Awtomic and Bold, and it reports churn, repurchase rates and cohort curves, with digests sent to Slack or email. Pricing is based on monthly order volume, starting at $199 a month on its Shopify listing. It is better at what subscribers do after signing up than at which ad brought them in.

3. ThoughtMetric

ThoughtMetric is an e-commerce attribution tool for Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and custom stores, and it works on the acquisition side of the subscription problem. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.) It splits revenue into new and returning customers for every channel, campaign and ad, reports new-customer ROAS and cost per new-customer order, and shows LTV by acquisition channel. Survey answers feed its attribution, which helps with podcast and word-of-mouth growth. Pricing starts at $99 a month based on pageviews. It is not a churn analytics tool, so pair it with Peel or your subscription platform’s reports for cancellations.

4. Lifetimely

Lifetimely by AMP covers LTV, cohorts and time between orders, plus a daily profit view that subtracts product, shipping and ad costs. For a subscription brand asking whether customers become profitable after the discounted first box, that is a quick answer without a warehouse. Pricing is based on monthly orders, free up to 50, $79 a month up to 500, $149 up to 3,000 and $299 up to 7,000.

5. Triple Whale

Triple Whale integrates with Recharge and Skio and is the closest all-in-one alternative to Polar, with dashboards, attribution and cohorts in one product. It has a free plan, and paid plans are priced by annual GMV on 12-month terms. If you like Polar’s breadth but want to compare a second platform, this is the one to price.

The check that matters for subscriptions

Whatever you trial, confirm that renewal orders reach the tool and are labeled as renewals. If your subscription app creates renewals as normal orders, some tools count them as returning-customer purchases from direct or email, which inflates those channels and hides the acquisition source. Ask each vendor to show you a renewal order in your own data during the trial.

Then agree on one LTV definition before comparing tools. Revenue or margin, twelve months or lifetime, with or without the first discounted order. Two tools using different definitions can both be right and still disagree by 40 percent. I went through the math in how to calculate LTV for a Shopify store, and the Triple Whale version of this list is in Triple Whale alternatives for subscription brands.
