Growing stores, one honest take at a time.

ThoughtMetric MCP vs Triple Whale Moby

Both of these let you ask your marketing data questions in plain English. The difference is where the AI lives. Triple Whale’s Moby is an AI built into Triple Whale’s own app. ThoughtMetric’s AI Connectors, which are built on the Model Context Protocol, bring your ThoughtMetric data into Claude or ChatGPT, the assistant you probably already have open. That one design choice drives most of the practical differences. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.)

What Moby is

Triple Whale describes Moby in two parts on its Shopify App Store listing. Moby Chat answers questions and builds reports. Moby Agents automate more complex analyses and flag potential issues. Because Moby sits inside Triple Whale, it can reach everything Triple Whale stores, including its attribution, creative, and cohort data, and it can lean on Triple Whale’s own views and automations.

The catch is packaging. Triple Whale spreads Moby features across its tiers and offers some as add-ons, and paid plans are priced on GMV with 12-month terms. Before you compare, confirm which Moby features your quoted plan actually includes.

What ThoughtMetric’s AI Connectors are

ThoughtMetric took the other route. Its AI Connectors expose your attribution data to Claude and ChatGPT through MCP, the standard those assistants use to read from outside tools. (ThoughtMetric is our sponsor.) Setup is a few minutes from the AI Connectors section inside ThoughtMetric, and it works on your phone as well as your laptop.

The data you can query is ThoughtMetric’s own: orders, revenue, spend, ROAS, CAC, and new versus returning metrics, broken down by channel, campaign, ad set, ad, product, SKU, country, discount code, and UTM fields. Since ThoughtMetric includes every feature on every plan, the connectors come with the standard subscription, which starts at $99 a month for 50,000 pageviews. You do need a Claude or ChatGPT account that supports connectors.

Inside the vendor vs inside your assistant

An in-app agent like Moby knows the vendor’s product deeply and can trigger things the vendor has built, like alerts and automated reports. It cannot easily see anything Triple Whale does not hold.

A connector works the other way. Claude or ChatGPT can combine ThoughtMetric data with other connected sources in the same conversation, such as a Google Sheet with your margins, your calendar of promotions, or a doc with last quarter’s plan. It can then do the general work assistants are good at, like writing the executive summary, building a slide outline, or reformatting a table for your finance lead. The tradeoff is that the assistant only knows what the connector exposes, so it cannot act inside ThoughtMetric the way Moby acts inside Triple Whale.

The questions I actually ask

Most of my AI questions are boring and specific. Which channel drove the most new-customer revenue last week? How did TikTok ROAS move after we changed the offer? Which five SKUs had the worst CAC in September? Either tool handles questions like these. Where I notice the difference is the follow-up. With a connector, the next request is often “now put that in a table with last year’s numbers from my sheet and draft a note to the founder,” and that is easier when the AI already lives where the sheet and the doc are. I listed more of these in the attribution questions I actually ask through MCP.

Accuracy is still the data’s job

Neither AI makes the attribution more accurate. It reads whatever the underlying model produced, and it can still misread a metric or pick the wrong date range. Check the first few answers against the dashboard, ask the assistant to state the dates and attribution model it used, and treat a confident paragraph the same way you would treat a confident junior analyst. On the security side, read is it safe to connect your analytics to an AI assistant before you connect anything.

Picking one

  • Your team already works in Claude or ChatGPT and wants attribution data there, included in the base plan? ThoughtMetric’s AI Connectors (our sponsor).
  • You want an agent that runs analyses and alerts inside your analytics platform, and you are already on Triple Whale? Moby.
  • Choosing an attribution tool for the first time? Pick on the attribution and price first, then treat the AI layer as a tiebreaker.

  1. ThoughtMetric vs Triple Whale vs Northbeam – The Ecomm Analyst Avatar

[…] All three now have an AI angle. Triple Whale builds Moby into its own app. Northbeam lists access to its MCP on its published plans. ThoughtMetric’s AI Connectors use MCP to put attribution data into Claude and ChatGPT, so you ask questions in the assistant you already use. I compared the two main approaches in ThoughtMetric MCP vs Triple Whale Moby. […]
