Brands sometimes buy Northbeam expecting it to fix their tracking, and it fixes something different. Northbeam is a measurement platform. Its documentation describes capturing first-party data with the Northbeam pixel and then modeling which channels deserve credit. Server-side tagging is a separate job, which is sending clean conversion events from your server to the platforms that optimize on them, like Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, GA4, and Klaviyo, so they stop losing purchases to ad blockers and browser restrictions.
Northbeam does cover part of that for Meta through Apex. Its documentation says Apex sends Northbeam’s attributed order-level data to Meta through the Conversions API, so Meta can optimize against Northbeam’s numbers instead of its own. Any customer can turn on the data sharing, but Meta-side optimization is invite-only, and Apex currently centers on Meta. If you need clean server-side events going to Google, TikTok, GA4, or your email platform, you need a tagging layer alongside or instead of Northbeam. Here are five. The background on why it matters is in do you need server-side tracking for accurate attribution?.
Elevar
Elevar, now sold as Audiense Online, is the most complete managed option for Shopify, and its pricing changed this year, so ignore older figures you have seen. Core is $225 a month for up to 2,000 orders and two destinations. Advanced is $650 for up to 10,000 orders and four destinations, adding profit signals and custom events. Premium is $1,250 for up to 30,000 orders and ten destinations, and Elite starts at $3,000. Overage on Core runs $0.50 per extra order, and extra destinations are $125 a month each on Advanced and up. Its destination list includes Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, Klaviyo, and now OpenAI, and there is a 15-day trial. The destination caps are the thing to model, because two destinations on Core disappears fast.
Stape
Stape hosts server-side Google Tag Manager containers, which makes it the cheapest route if someone on your team knows GTM. Its pricing page lists a free plan up to 10,000 requests, Pro at $17 a month billed annually for up to 500,000 requests, and Business at $83 a month billed annually for up to 5 million. Requests are not orders or events, since page loads and scripts count too, so use its calculator before picking a tier. You build and maintain the tags yourself. That is the trade for the price.
Littledata
Littledata is the Shopify-specific managed option priced per order. Its Shopify listing shows $0.35 per tracked order, with destinations including GA4, Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, Pinterest, and Klaviyo. Per-order pricing is simple to forecast and scales cleanly with volume, though at a few thousand orders a month it can cost more than a flat plan. It is especially strong with subscription apps, which matters if renewals make up much of your revenue.
ThoughtMetric
ThoughtMetric sits in between. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.) It is an attribution platform like Northbeam, but its plans include server-side tracking and sending conversion data back to Meta and Google, so one tool covers measurement and the two ad platforms most brands spend the most on. Pricing starts at $99 a month for 50,000 pageviews with every feature included and a 14-day trial. It is not a general tag manager, so if you need events flowing to Klaviyo, Pinterest, or GA4, pair it with one of the tools above. It also does not model view-through conversions the way Northbeam does, so compare that if upper-funnel video is a big share of your spend.
Self-hosted server-side GTM
Google’s server-side Tag Manager container is free to use, and you pay for the cloud hosting underneath it. For a brand with an engineer who wants full control, this is the most flexible setup there is. For everyone else, it means owning infrastructure, monitoring, and every platform API change yourself. Most brands that start here move to Stape or a managed tool within a year, mainly to stop paying engineering time to babysit it.
Keep Northbeam or not?
This is usually not an either-or decision. Plenty of brands run Northbeam for measurement and Elevar or Littledata for tagging, because the jobs are different. The case for replacing Northbeam rather than adding to it is cost, and it is covered in is Northbeam worth it for a brand under $20M. The case for adding a tagging layer is simpler. If Google, TikTok, or Klaviyo are optimizing on incomplete data, your measurement can be perfect and your campaigns will still underperform.
