Meta will always tell you its ads are working. Its attribution counts views and clicks within its own window, it cannot see the other channels that touched the same buyer, and when Meta and Google both claim a sale, both reports count it. I explained the mechanics in why Meta’s reported ROAS is inaccurate. None of that means Meta is not working. It means the question of how much Meta drives needs a source other than Meta.
The tools below measure that from different angles. The best setup uses two of them, one that tracks orders independently and one that checks whether those orders would have happened anyway.
Meta Conversion Lift
Meta’s own lift studies are the most rigorous tool on this list and the most overlooked. A lift study holds out a randomized group from seeing your ads and compares purchase rates, which measures incremental sales rather than attributed ones. It is free to run through Meta for eligible advertisers. The limits are that you need enough spend and conversions for a readable result, the test takes weeks, and Meta is still the one running it. I treat a lift study as a calibration check a couple of times a year, not as daily reporting.
Northbeam
Northbeam is the strongest option for brands spending heavily on Meta prospecting. Its Clicks plus Deterministic Views model gives structured credit to ad impressions, which matters for video and upper-funnel campaigns that drive people to search later. Through Apex, it can also send its attributed order data to Meta through the Conversions API so Meta optimizes against Northbeam’s numbers, though its documentation says Meta-side optimization is invite-only. Starter is listed from $1,500 a month, which is the main reason smaller brands look elsewhere.
Triple Whale
Triple Whale is the most common independent view of Meta among Shopify brands. Its free plan includes the Triple Pixel with first and last click attribution, which is enough to see how far Meta’s own numbers sit from yours. Multi-touch attribution starts on Foundation, listed at $219 a month on its Shopify listing, scaling with GMV on a 12-month subscription. If you mainly want to sanity check Meta, the free plan is a reasonable start.
KNO post-purchase surveys
KNO catches the buyers pixels cannot. Someone sees a Reel on Tuesday, searches your brand on Friday, and buys. Every click tool credits search. A checkout survey asking how they heard about you credits Instagram or Facebook. Its Shopify listing shows Starter at $19 a month for one survey with three questions and unlimited responses, with higher plans at $119 and $299. Survey data is self-reported and imperfect, but the gap between survey share and attributed share is one of the most useful Meta numbers you can track. More on using it in using post-purchase surveys as a real attribution signal.
ThoughtMetric
ThoughtMetric covers attribution and surveys in one place. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.) It reports Meta results down to the campaign, ad set, and ad, with new-customer ROAS and cost per new-customer order, across five attribution models including its own multi-touch model. It folds post-purchase survey answers into attribution and sends conversion data back to Meta and Google. Pricing starts at $99 a month for 50,000 pageviews with every feature included and a 14-day trial. It does not model view-through conversions the way Northbeam does, so brands with heavy video prospecting should weigh that.
How I read Meta
I look at three numbers side by side each week. Meta’s reported ROAS, ROAS on new customers in my own attribution, and the share of survey respondents naming Meta. If the first is high and the other two are low, Meta is mostly retargeting people who were buying anyway, which I covered in is retargeting ROAS real?. If survey share runs well ahead of attributed share, Meta is doing more prospecting work than clicks show, and cutting it would hurt.
And if Meta is your only paid channel, start simple. The case for skipping a paid tool entirely is laid out in do I need an attribution tool if I only run Meta ads?.
