Men’s grooming brands live on the second order. The first purchase is often a starter kit or a discounted razor, and the business only works if the customer comes back for blades, refills or the next product. Acquisition leans on podcast reads, YouTube creators and gifting moments like Father’s Day and the holidays, and many brands also sell in big-box and drugstore retail.
So first-order ROAS undersells good channels and oversells discount-driven ones, and podcast listeners buy days later with a code or no trail at all. Here is what I would look for and five tools that fit.
What matters for a grooming brand
| Need | Why it matters | Tools that handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Podcast and creator codes | Listeners buy days later with a code | ThoughtMetric (sponsor), Fairing |
| New vs returning split | Refill orders inflate channel ROAS | ThoughtMetric (sponsor), Lifetimely |
| LTV by first order | Starter kits behave differently from full-price orders | Lifetimely |
| Multi-touch credit | Creator content and paid social overlap | Triple Whale, ThoughtMetric (sponsor), Northbeam |
| Gift detection | Gift buyers are not the user, so LTV looks low | Fairing |
1. Triple Whale
Triple Whale covers attribution, surveys and creator tracking in one platform. Foundation includes multi-touch attribution through the Triple Pixel, post-purchase surveys and influencer and affiliate tracking. Pricing is based on annual GMV and package, paid plans are 12-month subscriptions, and there is a free plan with first- and last-click attribution.
2. ThoughtMetric
ThoughtMetric is an e-commerce attribution tool for Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and custom stores. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.) It breaks revenue down by discount code, which is how most podcast and creator deals are tracked, and splits every channel by new and returning customers so refill orders do not flatter a campaign. Its post-purchase survey catches listeners who never used the code. Pricing starts at $99 a month based on pageviews, with every feature on every plan.
3. Lifetimely
Lifetimely answers the question that decides whether a starter-kit offer works, which is what those customers are worth six months later. It covers LTV, cohorts and profit for Shopify. There is a free plan up to 50 orders a month, and paid plans start at $79 a month for up to 500 orders, priced on order volume with a 14-day trial.
4. Fairing
Fairing lets you add a follow-up asking which podcast or creator, and target questions by new versus returning customers. Ask whether the order is a gift, because Father’s Day and holiday buyers will drag down your LTV numbers if you count them as normal customers. It is free up to 100 orders a month, then priced on order volume from $15 to $199, with every feature on every plan.
5. Northbeam
Northbeam fits a grooming brand spending heavily on YouTube and paid social, where its view-through models credit ads that people watch but do not click. Starter is listed at $1,500 a month for brands spending under $1.5 million a year on ads and is limited to Shopify. Professional, at $3,500 a month, works with any e-commerce platform.
Judge creators on 90-day value
I would never kill a podcast on its first-order ROAS. Pull everyone who used the code or named the show in the survey, and compare their 90-day revenue with paid social buyers. In my experience podcast buyers are often less discount-driven, but check that in your own data before you scale a show. More in how to attribute podcast sales, attribution tools for discount and influencer codes and attribution tools for subscription brands.
Retail makes this harder. When a brand is on shelf at a national chain, some of the people your ads reach will buy in the store, and your DTC numbers will understate the channel. I would watch DTC new customer counts in regions where the retail partner is strongest. If they dip while retail sell-through rises, your ads are working and the sale is just happening somewhere else.
FAQs
How do grooming brands attribute podcast ads?
Use a unique code per show, add the show as a survey answer, and add both together. Codes alone undercount because many listeners forget them.
How do refill and subscription orders affect ROAS?
They inflate it. Channels that touch existing customers before a refill get credit for revenue they did not create, so look at new customer ROAS for acquisition decisions.
How do you measure retail sales from online ads?
Compare retail sell-through in regions where you change spend, and ask in-store buyers through a QR survey on packaging. No pixel sees a store checkout.
What is the best attribution tool for a men’s grooming brand?
Triple Whale for one platform, Lifetimely for LTV, and ThoughtMetric, our sponsor, as the lowest-cost way to see channels by discount code and by new versus returning customers.
