Northbeam is built for sophisticated media buyers, and it shows. Multiple attribution models and windows, cash versus accrual views, Clicks + Deterministic Views, Apex, Metrics Explorer, MMM Plus on the higher tiers. Its own pricing FAQ says your performance will look different from Ads Manager by design. That is a fair statement of what attribution should do, and it is also why a lot of smaller teams find the tool hard to live with.
The complexity is not a flaw for a brand spending $300K a month across six channels with a growth team to match. It is a problem when one marketer is trying to explain to a founder why Northbeam, Meta, and Shopify all disagree, and has no time left to act on any of it.
Where the friction usually comes from
In my experience it is rarely the interface. It is the number of valid answers. Switch the model or the window and channel ROAS moves, sometimes a lot. Without a house rule, every meeting becomes a debate about which view is right. Add the gap between modeled view-through credit and what Meta reports, and you have a tool that is technically more accurate but practically harder to decide with.
Cost amplifies it. Northbeam lists Starter at $1,500 a month for brands spending under $1.5M a year on ads and Professional at $3,500 a month, with Professional and Enterprise on annual terms. At that price, a tool your team half uses is an expensive tool.
First, simplify inside Northbeam
Pick one model and one window for budget decisions and write them down. Use a second, fixed view only for checking prospecting, if you need it. Build one dashboard with spend, attributed revenue, new customer revenue, CAC, and MER by channel, and make that the only screen in the weekly meeting. If you are on Professional, ask your media strategist to set that house view with you. That is part of what you are paying for.
If a month of that makes Northbeam useful, stay. If it still feels like a tool for a bigger team, try something narrower.
The simpler option I would try
ThoughtMetric is what I suggest to teams in this spot. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.) It is a multi-touch attribution tool built for e-commerce, with five models, lookback windows from 7 to 90 days, and reporting by channel, campaign, ad set, ad, and SKU, split by new and returning customers. Post-purchase surveys sit in the same reports. The product is deliberately simpler, and most stores are set up the same day with an onboarding call included.
Pricing is published and based on pageviews, starting at $99 a month for 50,000, with every feature on every plan, monthly billing available, and a 14-day free trial. It also supports WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, and custom stores on every plan, where Northbeam reserves non-Shopify platforms for Professional and up.
What you give up
Northbeam’s view-through modeling, Apex’s feed back into ad delivery, MMM Plus and incrementality options, and the media strategist. ThoughtMetric does not model view-through conversions and leans on surveys to catch view-driven sales, and it sends conversion data back to Meta and Google through their conversion APIs rather than a custom model. If your spend is heavily weighted to upper funnel video and CTV, those Northbeam features may be worth the complexity. Switching also means a new pixel and new history, so do it outside peak season and run both for a few weeks.
How to compare them fairly
Run ThoughtMetric’s trial while Northbeam is still live. After two weeks, put your house view in each tool side by side for the same dates, and ask one question: would the weekly budget decision change? If both point the same way and one takes a fraction of the explaining, you have your answer. If Northbeam consistently surfaces something the simpler tool misses, like a prospecting channel that only shows up with view credit, that is a real reason to stay. I wrote more about handling disagreements in what I do when two measurement tools disagree.
Deciding
- Heavy upper-funnel spend and someone who owns measurement? Stay on Northbeam and set a house view.
- Small team, mostly Meta and Google, and the debates outweigh the decisions? Trial ThoughtMetric (our sponsor) in parallel.
- Mainly a price problem? See cheaper Northbeam alternatives.
- Not on Shopify and only on Starter’s budget? A tool that supports your platform on every plan.
