Best tools to measure BFCM while it’s happening

Most BFCM measurement advice is about the post-mortem. I wrote that one already in tools to measure whether BFCM actually worked. This post is about the four or five days themselves, from Thanksgiving on November 26 through Cyber Monday on November 30 this year, when you need to decide whether to raise budgets, pull a creative, or push an email earlier. The tools are mostly the same. What changes is which numbers you trust at which speed.

The rule I work by: watch store revenue hourly, watch channel efficiency daily, and judge attribution weekly. Most bad BFCM decisions come from reading a slow number at a fast speed.

1. Shopify’s Live View and analytics

Shopify’s own Live View is the fastest truth you have. It shows sessions, carts, checkouts, and orders as they happen, and the sales numbers are real orders, not modeled ones. I keep it open all weekend for one reason: to catch problems. A conversion rate that drops by half after a theme change or a discount code that stops applying shows up here first. It costs nothing extra and needs no setup, which is the whole point the week of Thanksgiving.

2. An attribution tool for daily budget calls

Once a day, usually early morning, I want deduplicated channel numbers: spend, attributed revenue, new customer revenue, and blended CAC, by channel and campaign. That is the job of an attribution tool rather than Ads Manager, because every platform claims more of the BFCM spike than it caused.

ThoughtMetric covers this with multi-touch attribution across connected channels, new versus returning splits, and product-level attribution, which matters when you discount specific SKUs. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.) Its AI Connectors also let you ask Claude or ChatGPT on your phone something like “which campaigns drove the most new customer revenue yesterday,” which beats opening a laptop at a family dinner. Pricing starts at $99 a month for 50,000 pageviews.

Northbeam offers optional hourly conversion data on its Enterprise plan for brands that genuinely buy media by the hour, plus a mobile app. Triple Whale is popular for its live summary dashboard and mobile app. Both are priced well above ThoughtMetric, so they make more sense if you already use them.

Whichever you use, set it up now. A tool installed in November has no prior-year baseline and an untested pixel. That is covered in what to fix in your attribution before Black Friday.

3. Ads Manager, read carefully

You still need the ad platforms during the weekend, mostly for delivery: spend pacing, CPMs, frequency, and which creatives are getting impressions. I avoid making budget decisions on their ROAS columns, which tend to look best exactly when CPMs spike and returning customers would have bought anyway. My view on platform ROAS is in what attribution window to use during Black Friday.

4. A server-side tracking check

If you use a server-side tool like TrackBee or wetracked.io, check once a day that purchases in Ads Manager are roughly tracking Shopify orders. Traffic spikes are when tracking breaks quietly. TrackBee now has a mobile app for this, and most of these tools have a status dashboard. A sudden gap between platform purchases and real orders is a tracking problem, not a performance problem, and it will mislead the algorithms if you leave it.

5. Your email platform

Klaviyo and similar tools show campaign revenue within hours, which helps with send timing and subject line choices. Treat the revenue figure as an upper bound. Email platforms credit any purchase within their window after an open or click, and during BFCM that captures a lot of people who were already coming back. I covered how wide that gap gets in what Klaviyo counts as email revenue.

What to decide live and what to leave

Decide live: fixing broken checkout or tracking, pausing creatives with clearly bad click-through, shifting budget between campaigns inside a channel, and moving email sends. Leave for later: cutting a channel, judging prospecting versus retargeting, and anything involving LTV. Those need the full week of data and usually a few weeks of repeat purchases before the answer is honest.

The short list

  • Hourly store health: Shopify Live View.
  • Daily channel and campaign calls at a published price: ThoughtMetric (our sponsor).
  • Hourly media buying at very high spend: Northbeam Enterprise.
  • Already on it and want a live mobile dashboard: Triple Whale.
  • Tracking health: your server-side tool’s dashboard, checked against Shopify daily.

Six years in e-commerce. Three Shopify stores across different niches, one scaled past seven figures. I’ve tested hundreds of ad creatives, obsessed over email flows, and learned more from my failures than my wins.

Now I focus on conversion optimization, retention marketing, and the analytics behind it all. This blog is where I share what actually works, backed by real numbers. No fluff, no guru energy.
