Shopify attribution tools with post-purchase surveys

Post-purchase surveys used to be a separate app you checked once a month. Now several attribution tools read the answers straight into their models, which changes how much weight the survey carries. The real difference between tools is less about whether they offer a survey and more about what they do with the answer when it disagrees with the pixel.

There are two kinds of setup. Some attribution tools include a survey and combine it with pixel data. Others are survey apps that feed an attribution tool. Here are four Shopify options across both, and how each handles the overlap.

1. ThoughtMetric

ThoughtMetric includes post-purchase customer surveys on every plan and combines the answers with its pixel data, so survey-driven orders appear in the same attribution reports. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.) You can also set up custom channels for offline campaigns like podcasts and direct mail and have survey answers credit them. It offers five attribution models, and its pricing is based on monthly pageviews, starting at $99 a month for 50,000, with monthly billing. It does not model view-through conversions, so the survey is how it catches view-driven discovery.

2. Triple Whale

Triple Whale‘s native survey has the clearest documented logic. When its pixel has no click data for an order and the buyer names a channel, the order is credited from the survey. When the answer matches what the pixel saw, the order is deduplicated. Survey-credited orders show in their own row on the attribution report, so you can see how much the survey is adding. It can also take responses from Kno or Fairing. Paid plans are quoted through a demo on 12-month terms, and its Shopify App Store listing shows Foundation from $219 a month.

3. Fairing

Fairing is the survey app most built around attribution. It uses a single question stream, ties every answer to the order and its lifetime value, and integrates with attribution and marketing tools so the answers travel. Pricing scales with order volume only, free up to 100 orders a month and then $15 to $199 a month, with every feature on every plan. Each store needs its own plan.

4. KnoCommerce

KnoCommerce suits brands that want to ask more than one question and slice answers by order attributes. Starter is $19 a month with one live survey and three questions, Analyst is $119 with integrations that send answers to tools like Triple Whale, and Pro is $299, all billed monthly with a 7-day trial and no long-term contract.

How to write the question

The question matters more than the tool. Ask “How did you first hear about us?” rather than “What made you buy?”, because the first catches discovery and the second catches whatever closed the sale, which is usually the retargeting ad your pixel already saw. Keep the list to eight or ten options, randomize the order, and add “other” with a text box. Split podcasts and influencers into named options once they are big enough to budget for.

Do not expect everyone to answer, and do not treat the survey share as exact revenue. Use it as a trend. If the share naming a channel rises for three months while you increase spend there, the channel is probably working, whatever the pixel says.

When the survey and the pixel disagree

Disagreement is the useful part. If a buyer names TikTok and the pixel credits Google brand search, both are partly right: TikTok created the demand and search captured it. Tools that deduplicate, like Triple Whale, or that combine both signals, like ThoughtMetric, handle this inside the report. If you run a survey app beside a separate attribution tool, compare channel shares monthly and treat a large gap as a prompt to test the channel, not to pick a winner. More on that in how do you tell which ads are actually bringing in sales.

Where surveys mislead

Surveys have their own biases. Buyers over-credit channels they remember, like a podcast host or a friend, and under-credit the paid social ad they scrolled past three times. Brand-name search rarely shows up, because nobody remembers searching. Returning customers often answer for a purchase years ago. Show the survey only to first-time buyers if your tool allows it, and read it alongside the pixel rather than instead of it.

For most Shopify brands, I would start with the survey inside whichever attribution tool you already use, if it has one, and only add a separate app if you need more questions or more segmentation. A thank-you page survey also gets far more answers than one sent by email a week later, and the answers are fresher.

Picking one

  • Want surveys and multi-touch attribution in one tool at a pageview price? ThoughtMetric (our sponsor).
  • Want documented dedup logic between survey and pixel? Triple Whale.
  • Already have attribution and want the most attribution-focused survey app? Fairing.
  • Want multi-question surveys and segmentation? KnoCommerce.
