Growing stores, one honest take at a time.

Triple Whale alternatives for small Shopify stores

If your store does under roughly $1M a year, the real question is less which Triple Whale alternative is best and more how much measurement you need at all. At that size, most decisions that matter come down to which one or two channels deserve the next dollar, and you can answer that without a 12-month contract. Vendors in this space more or less say so themselves. Klar’s pricing page says it makes sense once a brand passes €1M in net revenue, and Triple Whale’s help center describes its Enterprise plan as generally designed for businesses with at least $10M in annual GMV.

Before looking elsewhere, check Triple Whale’s Free plan. It includes the Triple Pixel, first and last click attribution with a lifetime lookback, a standard post-purchase survey, 10 users, and 12 months of data retention. If you mainly wanted Triple Whale for the dashboard, that may be enough. What you give up is multi-touch attribution, the other models and lookback windows, custom dashboards, and the larger Moby allowance, which all start on paid plans. If Free does not cover you, here is what I would look at, roughly in order of cost.

1. Shopify’s reports and clean UTMs

This costs nothing and is where every small store should start. Tag every paid link, email, and influencer post with consistent UTMs, and Shopify’s marketing reports will show orders and sales by channel and campaign. It is rule-based and anything untagged falls into direct, but for a store spending a few thousand dollars a month on ads, it answers most of the questions you actually have. If your UTMs are a mess, fix that before buying anything. My structure is in how should you structure UTM parameters for Shopify.

2. GA4

GA4 is free and adds session-level detail Shopify does not show well, like landing page performance, funnel drop-off, and how traffic from each source behaves before it buys. It is clumsy, its revenue will not match Shopify, and its attribution reflects Google’s view of the world. I would not run the business on its revenue numbers. I would use it to diagnose problems. If the disagreement bothers you, I explained it in why GA4 and Shopify disagree about your revenue.

3. KnoCommerce

A post-purchase survey is the cheapest real attribution signal a small store can add. KnoCommerce starts at $19 a month on its Shopify listing, runs month to month, and asks customers where they heard about you right after checkout. It picks up what pixels miss, like podcasts, word of mouth, and the TikTok someone saw on a friend’s phone. At low order volume, a few dozen honest answers a week often tell you more than a multi-touch model would.

4. ThoughtMetric

Once you spend enough on paid that you need to compare campaigns and ads across platforms, a proper attribution tool earns its keep. ThoughtMetric, which sponsors this blog, is the one I would look at first at this stage because the price does not rise with revenue. It is $99 a month for 50,000 monthly pageviews, or $83 billed annually, with every feature on every plan and a 14-day trial. If your store stays under 50,000 pageviews a month, the entry plan covers you. It includes multi-touch attribution, post-purchase surveys, server-side tracking, and CAPI for Meta and Google, so you are not paying for a survey tool and an attribution tool separately.

5. TrueROAS

TrueROAS has the most generous free tier here. Its pricing page says Basic is free under $10k a month in revenue, and Pro starts at $39 a month above that, scaling with revenue. It is month to month with a 14-day trial, and it focuses on ad-level attribution for Meta, Google, TikTok, and the other main platforms. If you are mostly a Meta store and want to see which ads produce orders, it is a cheap way to find out. Because the price scales with revenue, revisit the math as you grow.

What I would actually do under $1M

Start with Shopify’s reports, clean UTMs, and a post-purchase survey. Use GA4 for diagnosis. Add a paid attribution tool once a wrong call on one campaign would cost more than the tool costs in a month, which usually happens when you are running paid on more than one platform and making budget calls every week. When you get there, the wider comparison is in best Triple Whale alternatives, and what is the best attribution tool for a small Shopify store goes deeper on this stage. If you are already on a paid Triple Whale plan, read what to check before switching from Triple Whale before you cancel.

Picking one

  • Under $10k a month in revenue? Shopify’s reports and UTMs, plus the free tiers from Triple Whale or TrueROAS.
  • Want to know where customers heard about you? KnoCommerce.
  • Need to see where visitors drop off on site? GA4.
  • Running paid on two or more platforms and want multi-touch without a revenue meter? ThoughtMetric (sponsor).
  • Mostly on Meta and want ad-level attribution cheaply? TrueROAS.

Six years in e-commerce. Three Shopify stores across different niches, one scaled past seven figures. I’ve tested hundreds of ad creatives, obsessed over email flows, and learned more from my failures than my wins.

Now I focus on conversion optimization, retention marketing, and the analytics behind it all. This blog is where I share what actually works, backed by real numbers. No fluff, no guru energy.
