Meta Ads Attribution: How to Measure Performance Beyond Ads Manager

Meta Ads Manager reports conversions under its configured attribution settings and available signals. Shopify records orders. Differences can come from attribution windows, modeled conversions, view-through credit, consent, browser restrictions, duplicate events, timezone settings, and cross-device behavior. A mismatch is not automatically evidence that either system is broken.

Set a measurement hierarchy

Use Ads Manager for in-platform diagnostics such as delivery, CPM, frequency, creative, and audience trends. Use Shopify or the order system for realized orders, net revenue, refunds, and customer status. Use a cross-channel attribution view to compare paths and channel allocation, while keeping its model assumptions visible.

Audit the event pipeline

Check that purchase events fire once, values and currencies are correct, browser and server events are deduplicated, and campaign UTMs are consistent. Test checkout and post-purchase flows after theme, app, or checkout changes. Separate new-customer purchases from returning-customer purchases when assessing acquisition.

Compare performance on consistent windows

Align date range, timezone, conversion definition, and revenue basis before comparing systems. Evaluate both short-term campaign results and longer-term customer value. Avoid comparing platform-attributed purchase value directly with Shopify net sales if one includes taxes, shipping, or modeled view-through conversions.

Use independent evidence for budget shifts

Track blended CAC, new-customer revenue, contribution after marketing, and total store growth. ThoughtMetric can help provide another view of channel journeys and reported performance, but no dashboard alone proves incrementality. Use geo tests, holdouts, or controlled budget changes where feasible.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Meta report more purchases than Shopify?

Meta may include view-through or modeled conversions, use a different attribution window, or count events that Shopify does not treat as completed orders. Audit event deduplication and compare definitions.

Should I turn off view-through attribution?

Not automatically. Report click-through and view-through separately where possible, and assess their usefulness with independent tests rather than relying on one setting.

What ROAS should I trust?

No single ROAS is universally authoritative. Use platform ROAS for optimization signals and reconcile business outcomes with store revenue, contribution, and incrementality.

Can ThoughtMetric replace Meta Ads Manager?

No. It can add a cross-channel perspective, while Ads Manager remains useful for campaign delivery and creative diagnostics.

The most reliable measurement system combines consistent definitions, reconciled commerce data, channel diagnostics, and experiments. Review assumptions whenever your store, tracking setup, or marketing mix changes.
