Attribution tools for footwear brands

Footwear has a measurement problem most categories do not: size. A first-time buyer is unsure of fit, so returns and exchanges run high on first orders, while a repeat buyer knows their size and comes back with little prompting. That splits a footwear brand into two businesses. Paid media mostly buys the first order, which is the riskiest one, and repeat orders carry the margin. An attribution tool that reports gross revenue on blended customers will flatter the channels that bring in the most returns.

So for a shoe brand I care about three things before features: whether the tool reflects refunds, whether it splits new and returning customers, and whether it can show results by style. Here is how five tools fit.

The short version

ToolBest fit for footwearStarting price
Triple WhaleCreative-heavy brands testing many styles on Meta and TikTokFree plan, paid GMV-based on 12-month terms
ThoughtMetric (sponsor)Refund-aware attribution split by new and returning customers$99 a month
NorthbeamLarge video budgets that need view credit$1,500 a month
Polar AnalyticsBrands that want a governed dataset and custom reportsNot listed on the website
KnoCommerceAsking buyers about discovery and fit$19 a month

1. Triple Whale

Triple Whale suits footwear brands that live on creative testing, cycling colorways and launches through Meta and TikTok. Its creative reporting and views-based model help judge video ads, and its free plan covers first and last click attribution. Multi-touch starts on paid plans priced by annual GMV and package on 12-month terms, so a brand with a high return rate should ask whether GMV is counted before or after returns.

2. ThoughtMetric

ThoughtMetric is an e-commerce attribution tool for Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and custom stores. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.) Its back-end order connection picks up refunds and cancellations, so a channel that drives lots of returned first orders shows up that way. It splits results into new and returning customers, and its product analytics show performance by product, which helps when one style carries the catalog. Pricing starts at $99 a month based on pageviews, with post-purchase surveys included.

3. Northbeam

Northbeam fits footwear brands with large video and social budgets. Its models include Clicks + Modeled Views and Clicks + Deterministic Views, which credit people who watched an ad and bought later without clicking. Starter is listed at $1,500 a month, described as month-to-month for Shopify brands, so it makes most sense once paid social spend is well into six figures a month.

4. Polar Analytics

Polar Analytics is a business intelligence platform with attribution inside it, built on a dedicated Snowflake database with custom reports. For a footwear brand with an analyst, that means you can define net revenue, exchange handling and size-level reporting once and every report follows. Polar’s pricing is not listed on the website.

5. KnoCommerce

KnoCommerce is a post-purchase survey with multi-question support, which footwear brands can use for more than attribution. Ask where buyers heard about you, then ask whether they bought their usual size. Starter is $19 a month with three questions, Analyst is $119 with unlimited questions, and Pro is $299, billed monthly with a 7-day trial.

How I would set up footwear reporting

Report new-customer revenue net of refunds by channel, and give it at least 45 days to settle before judging, since returns trail orders by weeks. Track exchanges separately from refunds. An exchange keeps the revenue but costs two shipments, so a channel heavy in exchanges is less profitable than its ROAS says.

Then watch returning-customer revenue as its own line. Once buyers know their size, repeat orders tend to come through email and direct visits, and that is where footwear profit sits. Wholesale matters too. If you sell through retailers, some of your ad spend drives sales you never see in Shopify. More in attribution tools for apparel brands with high returns and attribution tools that handle refunds and returns.

FAQs

What is the best attribution tool for a shoe brand?

It depends on spend and channel mix. Creative-heavy brands on Meta and TikTok lean toward Triple Whale or Northbeam, while brands that want refund-aware, new versus returning reporting at a lower cost often pick ThoughtMetric, this site’s sponsor.

How should footwear brands handle returns in ROAS?

Use net revenue, after refunds, and wait for returns to settle before judging a campaign. Gross ROAS on first orders overstates channels that attract buyers unsure of their size.

Why does returning-customer revenue matter so much for footwear?

Repeat buyers know their size, return less and often buy without paid media. Splitting new and returning revenue shows what ads actually acquire versus what loyalty brings back.

Can attribution tools show which shoe styles ads are selling?

Several can report by product. That view helps catch cases where an ad for one style mostly sells another, which is common when a hero shoe pulls buyers into the catalog.
