TikTok is the hardest major ad channel to measure with clicks. People watch an ad, keep scrolling, and buy later, often by searching your brand on Google or typing your URL. TikTok’s own reporting tries to capture that with view-through credit, which tends to make its numbers look generous. Click-based attribution tools miss it almost entirely, which makes TikTok look weak. The truth is usually somewhere in between, and finding it takes more than one tool.
I covered the basics of how attribution tools handle TikTok in do attribution tools work with TikTok ads?. Here is the toolkit, with pricing from vendor pages.
TikTok Ads Manager and the Events API
Start with TikTok’s own measurement, set up properly. The pixel alone misses a lot of conversions, so connect the Events API, TikTok’s server-side connection, either through TikTok’s Shopify integration or a tagging tool. That improves both TikTok’s optimization and its reporting. Then treat its numbers as an upper bound. Check which attribution window your account uses, because view-through credit on a short-form video platform can attach a sale to an ad someone barely watched.
ThoughtMetric
ThoughtMetric gives you TikTok campaigns under the same rules as every other channel. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.) It reports TikTok spend, ROAS, new-customer ROAS, and cost per new-customer order at the campaign and ad level under five attribution models, and its multi-touch model shares credit with the first touch, which helps a discovery channel like TikTok. It also folds post-purchase survey answers into attribution, which matters more for TikTok than for any other channel. Pricing starts at $99 a month for 50,000 pageviews with every feature included and a 14-day trial. It does not model view-through conversions, so expect its TikTok numbers to come in lower than TikTok’s own.
KNO post-purchase surveys
If you only add one thing for TikTok, make it a survey. Buyers who discovered you on TikTok remember it even when they bought through Google, and a checkout question is the only way to count them. KNO lists Starter at $19 a month on its Shopify listing for one survey with three questions and unlimited responses. The comparison that matters is the share of buyers naming TikTok against TikTok’s share of attributed orders. At most brands I have seen run TikTok, the survey share is far higher.
Northbeam
Northbeam is the strongest option for brands spending heavily on TikTok, because its view-aware modeling gives structured credit to ad impressions rather than ignoring them or accepting TikTok’s view-through numbers at face value. Starter is listed from $1,500 a month, which only makes sense once TikTok and other video channels are a large share of a meaningful budget.
Triple Whale
Triple Whale is common among brands that run TikTok, and its free plan includes the Triple Pixel with first and last click attribution. Comparing TikTok’s first-click and last-click credit is a quick check on whether it is opening journeys that other channels close. Multi-touch attribution starts on Foundation, listed at $219 a month on its Shopify listing, scaling with GMV on a 12-month subscription.
Reading TikTok honestly
I look at four numbers for TikTok: its own reported ROAS, attributed new-customer ROAS in my attribution tool, the survey share naming TikTok, and branded search volume. When the first and third are high and the second is low, TikTok is creating demand that converts elsewhere. If all four are low, it is not working. For a definitive answer, run TikTok in some regions and not others for four weeks and compare total sales, a method I described in running a cheap geo holdout to sanity-check a channel.
The mistake to avoid is cutting TikTok because click attribution says it is unprofitable. Watch new-customer counts and branded search for a few weeks after any cut. If both fall, TikTok was doing more than its clicks showed.
