Best analytics tools for non-technical people

The analytics tools that impress in a demo are often the ones nobody at a small brand opens after the first month. Custom dashboards, SQL editors, and dozens of configurable metrics assume someone has the time and training to set them up. At most brands doing $1M to $20M, analytics is done by a founder or a marketer in between everything else, and the best tool is the one that answers the common questions without being configured.

So I judged these on four things. Do the default reports answer real business questions? Can you get an answer without building anything? Is it clear what each number means? And is the price predictable? This list covers analytics broadly, meaning sales, customers, products, and profit. For the attribution side specifically, see best attribution tools for non-technical people.

Shopify Analytics

Start with what you already have. Shopify’s built-in analytics cover sales, orders, top products, new versus returning customers, and conversion rate, with no setup and no extra cost. For a lot of questions a non-technical owner asks, like what sold this week or whether returning customers are up, it is the fastest and most trustworthy answer, because it is your own order data. Its limits are ad spend, profit after costs, and customer lifetime value, which is where the tools below come in. I covered how far the built-in tools go in does Shopify have built-in attribution, and is it enough?.

Lifetimely

Lifetimely is the easiest way to answer the two questions Shopify handles worst: are we actually profitable after every cost, and what is a customer worth over time? Its P&L, LTV, and cohort reports work out of the box once you enter your costs, and a daily profit report can land in your inbox. Pricing is on monthly orders: free up to 50, $79 for up to 500, $149 for up to 3,000, and $299 for up to 7,000, with a 14-day trial and all features on every plan.

ThoughtMetric

ThoughtMetric covers the marketing side for people who do not want to learn an analytics platform. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.) Its default views show MER, new-customer ROAS, and cost per new-customer order by channel and campaign without building anything, and its AI Connectors let you ask Claude or ChatGPT questions in plain language, answered from defined metrics so you are not trusting the assistant’s own math. Pricing is on monthly pageviews, starting at $99 a month for 50,000, with every feature on every plan and a 14-day trial. It is focused on marketing performance rather than profit and inventory, so it pairs with Shopify or Lifetimely rather than replacing them.

Lebesgue

Lebesgue combines store and ad analytics with competitor tracking and benchmarks, which is useful context for someone without an analyst to tell them whether a bad week is unusual. Its analytics plans are a free tier, Ultimate at $79 a month, and Ultimate AI at $149. The free tier makes it easy to try before committing.

Better Reports

Better Reports is for the moment Shopify’s built-in reports almost answer a question but not quite. It has over 100 prebuilt reports covering sales, inventory, customers, and payouts, which means a non-technical user can usually find the report rather than build it, plus scheduled email delivery so the numbers come to you. Pricing on its Shopify listing is tied to your Shopify plan, so check the listing for your tier.

A word on GA4

GA4 is free and powerful, and most non-technical owners find it frustrating. Its reports need configuration to answer e-commerce questions, its numbers rarely match Shopify, and its interface assumes familiarity with events and dimensions. Keep it installed for traffic analysis, but do not make it the tool you rely on for business decisions unless someone on the team enjoys working in it. I explained why its revenue rarely matches in why GA4 and Shopify disagree about your revenue.

About

Six years in e-commerce. Three Shopify stores across different niches, one scaled past seven figures. I’ve tested hundreds of ad creatives, obsessed over email flows, and learned more from my failures than my wins.

Now I focus on conversion optimization, retention marketing, and the analytics behind it all. This blog is where I share what actually works, backed by real numbers. No fluff, no guru energy.
