Growing stores, one honest take at a time.

Attribution tools for Shopify Plus brands

Shopify Plus brands usually come to attribution with a different set of problems than smaller stores. The checkout is no longer something you customize with scripts. There are often expansion stores for other regions, each with its own currency. There may be retail locations running Shopify POS, a wholesale channel, or a headless storefront. A tool that works fine for a single US store can fall apart on any of those.

So before comparing vendors, I would get clear on which of those you actually have, because that decides the shortlist more than any feature grid.

What is different on Plus

The biggest change is the checkout. With checkout.liquid retired, tracking scripts can no longer be dropped into the checkout pages, and purchase tracking runs through Shopify’s customer events and web pixel framework instead. Any tool you consider should be able to explain exactly how it captures checkout and purchase events today. I covered the details in Does Shopify checkout extensibility break attribution tracking?

The second is store structure. If you run expansion stores, you need to know whether a tool can report across all of them in one view, how it handles currency conversion, and whether it bills per store. I wrote about the currency side in Attribution tools for international and multi-currency brands, and if you have retail, Can attribution tools track Shopify POS and offline sales? is the place to start.

Triple Whale

Triple Whale is built around Shopify, and its paid plans include unlimited users and integrate with as many stores as you need, with multi-store and multi-geo reporting listed as features. That makes it one of the easier fits for a brand with several expansion stores. Paid tiers are priced on annual GMV plus package and are 12-month subscriptions, and at Plus revenue levels you should expect the higher GMV bands. Enterprise adds Compass for MMM and incrementality, plus retail data from partners such as Target and Walmart.

Northbeam

Northbeam is a common choice for Plus brands with large paid social budgets. Its Starter plan, listed from $1,500 a month for brands spending under $1.5 million a year on ads, is month-to-month for Shopify stores. Most Plus brands will be looking at Professional, listed from $3,500 a month for up to $500K a month in ad spend, or Enterprise, which adds regional dashboards and touchpoint-level exports. For multi-store or international setups, Northbeam asks you to talk to sales, so get the structure and price in writing.

Polar Analytics

Polar Analytics suits Plus brands that already have, or want, an analyst working in the data. It is a BI platform with unlimited users, unlimited history, and unlimited connectors, which matters when you have several stores and a long list of tools to connect. Its pixel is included on the higher plans. Polar’s pricing is not listed on the website, so you will need a demo.

ThoughtMetric

ThoughtMetric works for Plus brands that want multi-touch attribution, post-purchase surveys, and product-level reporting without an annual contract. (Disclosure: ThoughtMetric sponsors this site.) Pricing is based on monthly pageviews, starting at $99 a month for 50,000, with every feature included, which means a high-traffic Plus store will sit well above the entry price, so check the pageview tier that matches your traffic before comparing. It integrates with Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, and Magento, which helps if part of your business runs on another platform. Each store runs as its own account, and you switch between them from a dropdown in the dashboard, so ask how they recommend handling expansion stores before you install anything.

Rockerbox

Rockerbox belongs on a Plus shortlist only if offline media is a meaningful part of your spend. Its strength is bringing TV, podcast, direct mail, and affiliate into the same measurement system as digital, with MMM and testing alongside. It is sold as modular products through its sales team, and since the DoubleVerify acquisition it sits inside a company that serves very large advertisers. For a digital-first Plus brand, it is usually more than you need.

Questions I would ask every vendor

Ask them to show, on a live account rather than a slide, a purchase that went through Shopify’s current checkout and appears in their attribution with its touchpoints. Ask how orders from Shop Pay and the Shop app are handled. Ask what happens to reporting when a customer browses on your US store and buys on your Canadian one. And ask what the price looks like at your actual traffic or GMV, across every store, for the full contract term, because Plus-sized numbers rarely match the starting rates on a pricing page.

Narrowing the list

  • Several expansion stores and want one rolled-up view? Start with Triple Whale.
  • Heavy paid social spend and view-through attribution matters? Northbeam Professional or Enterprise.
  • Have an analyst and want a full BI layer? Polar Analytics.
  • Want multi-touch attribution and surveys month-to-month, or run stores on more than one platform? ThoughtMetric (our sponsor).
  • Large TV, podcast, or direct mail budget? Rockerbox.
  • Whatever you pick, ask each vendor to show purchase tracking working under checkout extensibility before you sign.

About

Six years in e-commerce. Three Shopify stores across different niches, one scaled past seven figures. I’ve tested hundreds of ad creatives, obsessed over email flows, and learned more from my failures than my wins.

Now I focus on conversion optimization, retention marketing, and the analytics behind it all. This blog is where I share what actually works, backed by real numbers. No fluff, no guru energy.
