Report Pundit is one of the better custom-reporting apps on the Shopify App Store. It pulls basically any field Shopify holds, ships more than a hundred pre-built reports, connects to thirty-plus third-party sources, and schedules exports to Sheets, email, or BigQuery. There is a free plan for stores under a thousand lifetime orders, then paid tiers at roughly nine, nineteen, and thirty-five dollars a month depending on your Shopify plan, topping out around sixty. It is a solid tool. But “I need a better report” and “I have outgrown reports” are two different problems, and which alternative fits depends on which one you have.
The alternatives worth looking at
Start with the honest first question, because it changes everything. A reporting app is a spreadsheet engine bolted onto Shopify’s data. It is excellent for reconciling payouts, building a tax report your accountant will accept, or pulling inventory by location. What it does not do is tell you whether Meta actually drove the sales Meta says it drove. If the reports you keep building are attempts to answer “which channel is working,” you do not need a better reporting app, you need attribution. A purpose-built platform like ThoughtMetric (which sponsors this site) matches orders back to the ads and campaigns that produced them, which is a question no amount of Shopify report-building will answer, because the data simply is not in Shopify. If that is your actual pain, buy the tool built for it rather than a nicer export.
If you genuinely do just need better reports, here are the ones I would put next to Report Pundit.
Better Reports is the closest head-to-head competitor. It matches Report Pundit on custom fields, calculated metrics, multi-store, and scheduling, and it is often the pick for metafield-heavy catalogs. It starts higher, around twenty dollars a month, and scales up considerably for larger stores, so on price Report Pundit usually undercuts it at the entry tier while Better Reports competes on depth.
Data Export IO is the workhorse for scheduled exports. If your real need is dependable delivery to FTP, Google Drive, or a BI tool on a fixed schedule, it does that cleanly and starts a couple of dollars lower. It is less about dashboards and more about getting the right CSV to the right place at the right time.
Mipler is the option to look at if you care about visual dashboards and want something that presents well to stakeholders, not just rows you export. It handles metafields and larger data sets and leans more into on-screen reporting than the export-first tools.
Report Toaster earns a spot for having one of the stronger free plans in the category, which makes it a good place to test advanced reporting workflows before you commit budget. If you want to prove out a reporting habit before paying, start there.
One practical tip that applies across most of these tools, including Report Pundit and Better Reports: they will build your custom reports for you at no extra charge. This is the feature people underuse. Instead of spending an evening learning a report builder’s filter logic, you open the support chat, describe the report you want in plain English, and their team assembles it. If you are choosing between two apps that are close on features and price, the responsiveness and quality of that done-for-you service is a better tiebreaker than any spec sheet, because it is the thing you will lean on every time a new reporting question comes up. Test it during the trial by asking for something non-trivial and seeing how fast and how well they turn it around.
It helps to picture the job these tools are actually good at. The one I see justify the subscription most often is payout reconciliation. Shopify tells you what you sold. Your bank tells you what landed. Between them sit processing fees, refunds, chargebacks, and the timing lag of a payout cycle, and matching those two numbers by hand every month is the kind of task that quietly eats an afternoon. A reporting app that pulls the payout data, breaks out fees, and schedules the reconciled report to your accountant on the first of the month pays for itself in time saved. Same with a tax report that separates shipping and duties the way your accountant wants, or inventory by warehouse location. These are real, boring, valuable jobs, and they are squarely what a reporting app is for.
There is also the option most people forget: your Shopify plan already includes native reports, and on the Shopify tier or higher they cover more than teams assume. Sales by product, by channel, by discount, plus basic customer and finance reports are all in there. Before you add any app, it is worth thirty minutes checking whether the native reports plus a scheduled export get you eighty percent of the way there. Plenty of stores pay for a reporting app to rebuild something Shopify already produced, then use one custom report out of the hundred the app can make. If you find yourself in that spot, the app is not wrong, but a cheaper tier or the native reports might do the same work.
The short version. Report Pundit and Better Reports are the two deep custom-report tools, and Report Pundit usually wins on entry price while Better Reports competes on depth. Data Export IO for scheduled delivery, Mipler for visual dashboards, Report Toaster for a strong free trial run. But before any of them, be honest about whether you need a better report or an attribution tool, because they solve different problems and only one of them lives in Shopify’s data.
